Summer Internship Scheme for Physics Undergraduates

Summer Internship Scheme for Physics Undergraduates

The SEPnet Summer Internship Scheme

Each year, the South-East Physics Network (www.sepnet.ac.uk) offers bursaries to undergraduate Physics students to undertake eight weeks work experience in Industry. As these students are fully-funded by us, there is no salary cost to the company. Our aim is to increase the employability of our students through meaningful work experience, and of course to add value to your company with a fresh, motivated, numerate and analytical Physics student.

The scheme has been running for three years, and we have compiled case studies here http://bit.ly/t3waKc and here: http://bit.ly/unC0ER

Our customers from previous years include SELEX Galileo, BMW, the Met Office, the National Physical Laboratory, EADS Astrium, and many SMEs. We are happy to provide you with contact details of an industry advocate who has participated in this scheme, if you would like to discuss it with them. You are of course welcome to discuss the scheme with the Director of Employer Liaison at SEPnet, Claire Potter, at any time ([email protected] or 01273 877588).

The application process is very straightforward, and the company/supervisor can choose the student from the applications that SEPnet generates, to ensure that you find the student that best fits your business needs.

Projects should be based in South East England if possible, however we consider applications from further afield. Projects should offer relevant experience to Physics students in order to develop their analytical, scientific or business awareness skills. Physics graduates go on to do almost any type of job so we consider all applications very carefully.

Registration for projects is via this link: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/55J6B3D

Or you can use this word form http://bit.ly/ujjuuk and email it to [email protected]

Registration closes on Friday 27th January 2012.

Projects can be for eight weeks over the Summer, or the equivalent in hours across the year, should you wish to make an alternative arrangement with your student.
Any  information you can add about how the placement will enhance students’ employability and skills will be to your great advantage.

A briefing note about the 2012 Internships – and more information about SEPnet – is below.

SEPnet Summer Internships 2012

Fully sponsored Physics undergraduates

Would your business benefit from a bright and enthusiastic Physics undergraduate conducting work experience at your premises this summer?  SEPnet will sponsor a student of your choice to conduct research or complete a project as work experience for a period of eight weeks during the summer holidays (or equivalent hours spread over a longer period, subject to the agreement, of supervisor, student and students’ academic tutor).

SEPnet – The South East Physics Network

SEPnet is a consortium of seven physics departments at the Universities of Kent, Portsmouth, Southampton, Surrey, Sussex, Queen Mary and Royal Holloway supported by a five-year HEFCE grant of £12.5 m to promote excellence in Physics.  The consortium has four research themes, a collaborative Graduate School based on the European ECTS system, an Outreach programme of support and information to schools, and a regional Employer Engagement programme with industry.

There are 30 bursaries of £170 per week for Physics undergraduates in Year 2 and Year 3 MPhys/MSci in the SEPnet consortium.  Students in their final year are not eligible.

Your choice

Industries register a placement description which is then reviewed by the SEPnet board for suitability. If your project is chosen, you then select your preferred applicant(s) for an interview at company premises. A bursary is then awarded directly to the successful students.  The host is not obliged to provide a salary or payment, but must abide by an agreed statement of terms and conditions. Internships normally take place during the summer break from June – September.  Start and finish dates are mutually decided by the host company and their chosen student. Please note that vacation dates vary by institution.

How it works

  1. Please register a placement description online at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/55J6B3D

no later than Friday 27th January 2012 at 1700.

  1. From Friday 27th January 2011 to Friday 3rd February 2012 the SEPnet board will review the proposed placements and select 30 for the students to apply for. This will be based upon:
  1. Academic merit
  2. Potential to gain commercial awareness
  3. Potential to develop soft skills (ie, communication, teamwork).

Therefore, any information you can include as to how students will be able to develop these skills will increase your chances of success.

  1. From Monday 13th February 2012, the details will be advertised to eligible students internally through the Physics departments at the seven SEPnet university physics departments.
  2. Monday 13th February –Friday 27th April 2010. Interested students respond directly by sending an informative email and CV to the contact details provided.  Supervisors invite their preferred applicant(s) for an interview where appropriate. This includes non term time over the Easter Break.
  3. Supervisors should inform the SEPnet Director of Employer Liaison of the name of the successful student by Friday 27th April.

We look forward to your support of this scheme to promote excellence in physics in the South East.  Please feel free to contact Claire Potter by e mail ([email protected]

) or phone (01273 877588) if you wish to discuss further.
