Survey of High Street Development

Survey of High Street Development

Over the last few months Brentford Chamber has been canvassing its members for their opinions on Ballymore’s proposed High Street Development.

As well as informal conversations we also invited members to answer a short survey. We made the survey very short in the hope that far more of you would complete it then actually did. You still can at Survey Monkey but here are the results:

Survey response: 12 responses

Have you seen the plans: Yes 12
Do you support the plans: Yes 2 No:10
Would you consider relocating Yes: 2 No 10
Sufficient mix of retail space? Yes: 2 No 10
Will shopping centre attract bus/customers? Yes:2 No 10
Have you communicated with Ballymore re your needs? Yes: 2 No 10

Comments:
‘Do you support the plans’ yes or no?: how dumb a question is that! Do I want the site to be re-developed? : yes – so I have to support the plans as there is no alternative. Do I like the design? No – so I now have to say no to supporting the plans. Can I live with the height: Yes. Can I live with the density: No. In short – your questions, especially no 2 are way to unsophisticated to be of use. I have now been forced to answer yes or no on the two questions that can’t be answered, so I have done so. What a useless survey!
Brentford is more than just apartments for developers to reap corporate gains from.

I like the layout. However the scale of the buildings and the featureless bland design of the structures is reminiscent of discredited architecture from the 1960’s. This proposal completely ignores the highly cherished character and textures of existing and past properties and provides an unpleasantly sanitised and sterile environment.
Austere architecture which is not inviting on any level. Buildings too tall and close together. Development was supposed to be light and airy and open up to the river not create dark Dickensian alleyways.

The plans are too dense, too high and too unattractive to draw in the crowds, whether residential, commercial or retail. Brentford has waited long enough that it should have a legacy that will last.

My concerns are that the scheme is so ugly it will fail to attract the highest level of quality shops which will put shoppers off visiting Brentford. It needs a wow factor.

Should have more offices, retail units. To bring life to Brentford we need large business bringing employment to the area. This will happen not just through residential buildings but through office and retail buildings large enough to attract the companies to deploy their businesses in the area.

not great for Brentford Buildings look uninspiring a repeat of the poor architecture at the St Georges Kew Bridge development ? No waterside storage for canoes as we suggested in consultation

Lacking in character. Overbearing flats on high street. Unattractive design. No link to Brentford’s industrial heritage or Georgian high street. Loss of WK building & small Georgian house opposite Morrison’s is unacceptable. The council needs to push for the land swap idea for the move of Waterman’s into the town center.

I support the plans in general rather but concerned that the less profitable elements are not followed through. i.e. they build a big block of flats, sell them and move on.
