watermansautism“He was not like other boys…he did not see the world through the same eyes as us”
A boy called Tony struggles to fit in and find his place. He has a different way of looking at the world and longs to retreat to a place where he can be “nothing more than small and far off”. Those surrounding him have little patience for his dreams with the exception of his mother who will do anything to ensure his happiness.

“This show, inspired by Lucy Clifford’s 1882 story Wooden Tony and based on themes surrounding autism, represents an exciting change of direction for busy Hampshire company Forest Forge.

Richard Conlon’s very moving story is a kind of Pinocchio in reverse with its theme of a child whose behaviour marks him out as ‘different’ and the problems it can create.

The cast are exceptional and Lee Rufford is a revelation as the Boy who longs to be made of wood. The scene in which the Boy meets the wooden toy his father has made and the effect it has on his life and future is beautifully created. It’s an absorbing piece and Christopher Chamberlain, as Father, and Helen Jeckells, in the Mother role, win sympathy from the audience and bring realism to the story.
