DfE encourages more businesses to offer apprenticeships (Department for Education)
Get In Go Far, the government’s flagship campaign to promote apprenticeships has launched a new wave of activity, focused on promoting apprenticeships to employers. New analysis in support of the campaign highlights that small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are set to recruit 202,000 new apprentices in the next 12 months. Additional research also highlights the many ways in which apprentices boost the businesses they work for.
£191 million cash boost for the South West to help create local jobs and growth (Department for Communities and Local Government)
Communities Secretary Sajid Javid today has announced a government cash boost of £191 million for the South West to help create jobs, support businesses and encourage growth. This latest award of Local Growth Funding is on top of £780 million of growth funding already awarded to the 6 Local Enterprise Partnerships in the region – an investment which will see jobs created, homes built and extra investment.

Disability Works: Breaking down barriers in business (BBC News)
In the UK, it is thought that some seven million people of working age have a disability, with a collective spending power of £249bn to the economy. We’ll be looking at how businesses work with people with disabilities and how disabled people have made business work for them.
With the apprenticeship levy just around the corner many training providers are working with their large (and smaller) employers to scale up the size of their apprenticeship programmes. However, there’s an inherent problem in the current apprenticeship model – training the wider workforce how to support an apprentice.
The UK has considerably improved its performance in providing opportunities for women in the workplace, but it will still take until 2041 to close the gender pay gap in the UK, according to new research by PwC (below).
New jobs dashboard allows providers to explore local employment and skills needs (FE Week)
The Institute for Public Policy Research, the JPMorgan Foundation and Burning Glass have teamed up to create Where The Work Is. The website is completely free to use and helps users understand, down to national/regional and many Local Economic Partnership levels, which skills are over- and under-represented in their area and what local employers are seeking and valuing.

The latest NEET figures released by the government to December 2016, showing the proportion of young people not in education, employment or training (NEET) has decreased slightly for the 19-24 and 16-24 age groups and remained the same for the 16-18 age group.

PwC’s annual Women in Work report, focusing on female employment rates and gender pay gap across the OECD with a focus on the UK.

Network established to encourage diversity in apprenticeships (Department for Education)
The Apprenticeship Diversity Champions Network (ADCN) has been established to champion apprenticeships and diversity amongst employers and encourage more people from underrepresented groups. The network is comprised of 23 employers, including Rolls Royce, BBC, BAE Systems and a number of small- and medium-sized employers.
