UWL teams pitch winning business ideas to Brentford Dragons

After months of applications, selections, heats and presentations, the Grand Finale of Brentford Dragons took place on Wednesday 22 April. Four teams made it through to the final, all of them UWL students. The Brentford Dragons, all members of the Brentford Chamber of Commerce, challenge competitors to come up with a business idea or invention to help encourage entrepreneurship.

After a chance to look at the stands created by the four teams in the final, the guests enjoyed a presentation from each group. The finalists’ companies were Lokitech, a remote-controlled lock; Smart Desk, an elegant desk with technology built in; Unitouch, a social media site just for students; and Protein Punch, home-baked high-protein goods for athletes and gym users.

Visit from the Mayor of London

The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, paid a visit to Brentford on Wednesday.  He had been invited to Brentford by Mary Macleod and met with local people and businesses, including Brentford Chamber of Commerce President Suzie Betlem.

At at time of major change and upheaval within Brentford, Suzie had a brief discussion with Boris, during which they discussed the various issues currently faced by Brentford businesses and residents alike.  She explained that many believed that Hounslow Council and TfL had failed to comprehend the enormity of the transportation limitations and that the road infrastructure was already at breaking point – this was backed up by many attendees with people saying that it had taken 45 minutes to travel from Kew Bridge to Brentford.  Indeed the Mayor himself was delayed.

Mary Macleod MP Celebrates local women in business

On 5th March, Parliament held a debate in support of International Women’s Day on March 8th. During this Mary Macleod MP mentioned many local women in business:

In my west London constituency, in Chiswick, Brentford, Isleworth and Hounslow, one of the most well-known female entrepreneurs is Cath Kidston, who opened her first shop in 1993 and now has 59 stores in the UK and 54 across Spain, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Thailand, Taiwan, Hong Kong and China. She started making wash bags and aprons because she had over-ordered fabric.

Another entrepreneur from Hounslow is Shavata Singh, who is now famous for doing the eyebrows of the stars. Almost every department store now has a Shavata concession doing eyebrows—if you ever need them done, Mr Deputy Speaker. She has now established her flagship store in Knightsbridge and is doing amazing work. Angela Lyons-Redman, of My Plumber, is based in Brentford and Chiswick. She left her job as a solicitor because she thought she could offer a better, faster service in the plumbing world—initially working from her bedroom, with a plumber on a motorbike—and now employs 38 people and several apprentices. She is doing a great job with that company.

Consultation on Improvements to Ealing Road and A4 Junction

TfL is planning to modernise the traffic signal equipment at the junction of the A4 Great West Road with Ealing Road. The existing equipment which manages the operation of the junction is approaching the end of its operational life, and is in need of upgrading.

The current method of control has traffic circulating the roundabout receiving a green signal at the same time as Ealing Road, which means that traffic from Ealing Road is in direct conflict with traffic on the roundabout. To meet the current design and safety guidance this cannot continue so a new method of control will be introduced to separate the north and south flow to avoid conflicting movements.  However, traffic modelling exercises showed that implementing an additional signal phase to allow north and south traffic to flow separately would create a build up of traffic at the junction.
